Station III - The Neolyte Station

Chapter 3

The Resistance

By Dwayne Mills

Nick Captail awoke from his long restful sleep. He stared out the cockpit of his one man mining module. The stars dotted the blanket of space. Looking to his left at the small computer screen next to the emergency ejection button, Nick reread his mission objectives.

AGENT 334HGT5. IDENTIFY SECTORS 5-9 OF STATION III. REPORT ON
ANY DAMAGE THAT MAY BE A THREAT TO THE ONBOARD PASSENGERS. IF
ENCOUNTERED BY STATION III AUTHORITIES REMOVE THEM FROM YOUR
SECTOR. PREFERABLY BY STUNGUN PROCEDURE 23533. IF THIS PROCEDURE
IS NOT AVAILABLE USE ATOM LASER PROCEDURE 574378. RENDEVOUS WITH
SPACE MINING MODULE MOTHERSHIP IN VENUS ORBIT AT 07:00 GMT TERRA
1 TIME.

                                   GENERAL MCGLASHIN.
Nick read the message again then brought up the mission status. In three minutes the mining module Green Grass will enter a landing window to orbit Station III. In the meantime, Nick would be ready.

Nick had sandy blond hair but no one on Station III would see it. In fact no one would see his face at all. The Resistance had given him an altersuit. In reality, Nick was only 5ft tall, but because of altersuit, he looked to stand at nearly 7ft.

So no-one would see his face, The Resistance issued him a matching helmet for his suit which of space laws, a stranger was not allowed to enter the station until he was checked out by a doctor and quarentined for 5 hours. But he didn't have that time. So he had to wear a totally insulated suit.

Of course, Station III wouldn't just let anyone land there and hook up to them. Nick would need a reason. And of course The Resistance had thought of that little problem as well. They'd filled his ship with a shipment of mined Plant Lumanant Chemicals, a regular commodity used by all the scientists and doctors onboard.

Funny thing about The Resistance. They were easily the equals of the WSC. The Resistance was founded right after the Station 1 accident. The public had been angry for a while but after a few years things calmed down again...it was almost as if the entire population of earth had been bribed to shut-up, and in relatively no time, they forgot the whole incident.

The Resistance was out to destroy the WSC. Nick had been sent out to investigate a WSC executive on Earth when a Resistance astronomer caught glimpse of an explosion out on Station III. Thus he had been re-assigned this mission. And now he was close to concluding this little journey.

The Green Grass closed in on the Station, and the docking sequence came up on the Heads-Up-Display on the thick glass of the ship. Nick shut down the engines to ensure a non-threateninig coast-in. The station loomed in his canopy taking up all the visibility...all he could see was Station III. i

" Camera On," Nick said into the microphone inside his helmet. There was a silent hum as the hidden, headmounted camera started to record.

Nick reached over the control stick of the mining module, flicking on the ship-to-ship communicator. Most of the modern space ships had the 3D video screens but The Resistance didn't have the fund to provide all it's agents with such luxuries. They did though, provide Nick with a small arsenal.

On the communicator he said "This is mining module Green Grass number 44532-9, request permission for docking." He spoke through another microphone which collected the sound of his voice and altered it to sound like another person. just another feature of the altersuit.

"Copy that Green Grass. Make a 45 degree angle turn and continue at the same velocity,"

"Roger that," Nick said through the voice synthesizer.

After Nick docked he stepped into the station. The hand sensor attached to his left arm section of the altersuit confirming that their had been an explosion. Nick's sources had been right.

A man in old, dirty coveralls trotted over to him.

" Hi there," he said cheerfully, as if an explosion had been a good thing. Maybe he didn't know. Nick didn't answer him. the janitor stared into the two tinted eye-shutters of the altersuit's helmet.

"How's the reception in there?" the janitor said jokingly.

Nick wanted to kill the man and throw his body into the vacuum of space, but he had noticed a camera pointed straight at his neon green suit. The janitor glanced down at Nick's boots.

" Is there something you need from me?" Nick asked through the synthesizer. The janitor jumped up startled by Nick finally talking.

" Oh yes. Tower control wanted me to tell you that sectors 5 and 6 are unstable. Uhm, I mean that their is no artigrav there so you'll have to set those boots to magnetize," the janitor said nervously as if he could see Nick's dark eyes through the tint.

" How long till the window to venus is open?" Nick asked.

"Uhhh, two days till Venus is in your ships trajectory," the janitor said.

Nick couldn't fight back anymore. He pressed the automatic camera override button his left arm control panel. The camera he had noticed now would begin to show snow and glitch for the next five minutes. Plenty of time.

Nick opened a pocket on his suit and pulled out his Advantage Smith and Wesson Laser Pack. The gun's metallic body reflected light right to the janitors eyes and instantly, the man knew what was gonna happen to him. Nick put pressure on the stud and shot the janitor in his chest. The janitor fell over but no blood marked the floor. It was an advantage of the Advantage.

"Laser procedure 574378 my ass," Nick said with a hint of pleasure. He might enjoy this. Of coarse he'd also enjoy having to kill everyone on this station. But The Resistance had it's kill factor limits. Nick threw the body into his ship, closed the door, and went into the Mcdonald's for a snack. This was gonna be a good 2 days.
