Searching For Myself

By Julie Grey

I went to the mountain top
and I looked all around
I watched the eagles soar
never touching the ground,
and I wondered ,
"what am I doing here?
what is this for?"

Though I yelled very loudly,
no answers came forth.

I went to the canyon
and walked all around
I watched water rushing
from deep in the ground,
and I wondered,
"what am I doing here?
what is this for?"

Though my voice echoed loudly,
no answers came forth.

I went to the valleys
and wandered around
I saw creatures live gladly
never making a sound,
and I wondered,
"what am I doing here?
what is this for?"

Though my voice echoed loudly,
no answers came forth.

I went to the ocean
and stood on the shore,
heard seagulls calling
and wondered once more,
"what am I doing here?
what is this for?"

Though my voice echoed loudly,
the waves echoed more,
and so once again,
no answers came forth.

An old man lies dying,
his eyes see no more.
I hold his hand gently
and wonder no more.
