Night Sky

by Lee Baran

The moon was full and shining down brightly on the moors. Jason Garland was out after safely delivering his date back home, and was taking a shortcut to his own house. At twenty-three years old, a bodybuilder, and fitness fanatic, he was more than capable of running all the way back to his house, but for some reason he did not want to. He wanted to stay out and enjoy this perfect night, the shining stars, the watching moon.

Something flitted at the corner of his vision and he strained to see what it was.

Nothing there.

A noise from behind.

He whirled.

Nothing there.

The moon was obscured for a brief second, and he looked up to see a bat flying away. He laughed nervously, and was grabbed from behind as a voice hissed sibilantly in his ear.

"Don't you think they are pretty? They serve us well our kindred."

Jason was suddenly released and he turned to fight the opponent who had so stupidly grabbed him. He launched himself at his opponent, but encountered thin air as he went crashing into the ground. He rolled, came up.

The person was nowhere in sight.

A cackling laughter came from above. Jason looked up in time to see his opponent plunging down on him. The night sky listened on unconcerned to the sounds of suckling and screams of pain coming from below.

Jake was a curious boy, always questioning, trying to find out everything he could about the world and what was happening in it. To the surprise of his teachers they found him attentive and quick of mind. He was always serious, even about the little things. He had sandy blonde hair and brown eyes that watched with a very accurate view of the world. He was only seven when he saw his first vampire. His father had left several years ago, leaving him and his sister, Sabrina, with his mother.

He had gone looking for his mother one night, after grabbing a midnight snack, because she was not in her bed. When he finally found her, he watched her go to her current boyfriend, walking unsteadily, rhythmically. Her boyfriend had then kissed her, and worked his way to her neck, seeming to kiss it.

Then he lifted his head and Jake could easily see the fangs as it drew back its lips in anticipation of the feast before it. Jake was paralysed by fear and peculiarly, a mixture of curiosity and dread. He had to stand and watch as the fangs bit into their prey and gorged themselves on his mothers blood.

Then the vampire had dropped her, turning and seeing Jake stood there, and moved towards him.

Jake ran for home, his paralysis broken, as quick as he could to the safety of the house. He only just made it. The Vampire stood outside.

" Let me in boy, let me in. C'mon open the door"

"NO!" Jake looked at it through the wire mesh as he shouted his defiance and began feeling weird as his eyes met the burning eyes of the pale undead creature before him. Involuntarily, his hand reached for the handle, pulled it down, and pushed it open.

" Good....Now invite me in..I cannot come in otherwise and cannot give you the gift of immortality then. If you want it that is." It leered cruelly at him. "Of course you could come out here, but then I could not give the gift to your sister."

The vampire smiled showing his fangs.

As Jake opened his mouth, a shot rang out from the Old Jedson farm, probably Old 'Crazy' Jedson shooting rabbits again, but it distracted the vampire long enough to break the hypnosis.

Jake backed off, away from the hideous being before him.

"Get back here you little idiot" It ripped the wire mesh and moved forwards.

"Get away from here!" Jake was sobbing uncontrollably from fear and shock as he swung the wooden oak door closed.

The vampire howled and thumped the door.

Jake was shivering, still sobbing. The hammering stopped suddenly....... All was quiet.

Jake was suffering from shock and fear. A skittering noise ran across the roof. Jake was crying, mourning the loss of his mother A noise, like the protest of rusty hinges. Jake finally looked up, scared at what it may have meant

He stood, shaking like a leaf. Moving upstairs he paused to survey the bathroom. 'Better check it out' His mind was still calm, even though his emotions were wild.

Nothing in the bathroom.

He moved to his mothers bedroom. He still could not accept the fact she was now gone, even though he had seen it with his own eyes. Nothing stirred. He went back to the hallway.

A breeze touched his face.

He went into his own bedroom, taking scant comfort at the things he had took for granted before, the single bed, the toys stacked un-neatly in a cardboard box, the teddy bears that had been a gift from Sabrina. He opened the wardrobe.

Nothing jumped out at him.

He left, looking back longingly, wishing it could have been what it was like that same day before the midnight snack. The breeze came again.

There was only one other room in the hallway-Sabrinas.

He felt a shiver go down his spine and his mouth went dry. He realized he was unarmed, but did not what to get. They had no stakes or crosses, because his mother was not religious. No garlic, no one liked it.

He was on his own.

He took a deep breath and walked up to the door. He could see the bed was empty and the windows, which was open. He moved faster, over to the window, and stood staring out looking for anything that may give him a clue as to his sisters where abouts.

The door slammed behind him.

He spun round to see his sister held up, pressed onto the ceiling, by the floating vampire, which was grinning at him..

" Rule one boy, look up when fighting vampires." It stared at him, floating with its back pressed to the ceiling, like his sister.

"H..How...?" Jake stammered.

" She invited me. It was not hard for someone with my talents. I have given her the gift, it will soon be your turn."It turned Sabrinas neck slightly, and Jake could see the scabby teeth marks." She will soon be mine."

It then dropped her and came down to the ground. Jake could only stare at the limp form of his sister, unable to comprehend, because of the shocks he had already received. He moved his eyes and watched the vampire draw closer and closer. His mind shrieked at him, but he was unable to move.

It reached him and grasped his head.

Jake could smell the blood, the decay and the dirt emanating from the vampire, but it had no real impact. This whole encounter seemed like a bad dream, unreal, and ultimately he would die in it and wake to find himself in his own body.

He felt pain, stinging him out of the reverie, as it coursed through his neck.

He thrashed, but it was too late.

He was getting weaker and weaker, his struggles subsiding. He lost consciousness.

From the place down the road, a piercing howl could be heard, followed by silence, then a low cackling sound that set the dogs to barking. A portent of things to come, things in the night.
